Christmas in Lepe attracts more visitors each year thanks to the variety of the activities. The snowfall that is artificially provoked each year on an emblematic site in town deserves a special mention. Thousands come to enjoy this marvellous event which is the stuff of dreams for both the young and the old. Another attraction of the Christmas programme is New Year’s Eve rehearsal. On the 30th, a big crowd gathers in the heart of the village to rehearse the moment of the countdown chimes of the clock, with the corresponding grapes, party bags, music... included. Without a doubt, the culmination of this festivity is the emulation of the artificial snowfall, to great joy of the young, and not so young, in a show by nature improper to these lands.
The origin of these celebrations dates back to the 19th century, when the town was awarded a trade fair. Over the years the commercial aspect was lost, but its festive part remained. It is celebrated on 14, 15 and 16 August. On the 15th, a procession is held through the streets of the centre with Our Lady of La Bella, the village’s patron saint, where she is accompanied by thousands of inhabitants of Lepe and visitors. On the 16th, the Scouts of Lepe carry St. Roch, patron of the town, in a procession. During these festive days a great festival is held in the centre of town with musical performances, dance, popular stands and amusement rides. Parallel with these festivities the football tournament of La Bella is held.
